Das Comic ist in einem guten Erhaltungszustand. Im Dezember 1967 erschien in der Nummer 12 der Comicserie Marvel Super Heroes Captain Marvel zum ersten Mal. Marvel Comics wollte sich unbedingt den Namen des Superhelden sichern, weil ein anderer Captain Marvel - auch SHAZAM genannt - bei der Konkurrenz sein Unwesen trieb. Da Marvels Captain in einem völlig anderen Kostüm in unscheinbaren Grüntönen auftrat und zudem ein Ausserirdischer (Kree) war, gab es keine rechtlichen Probleme. Bereits nach seinem zweiten Auftritt (in Marvel Super Heroes #13) bekam er seine eigene Heftserie. Von 1968 bis 1979 erschienen insgesamt 62 Ausgaben mit seinen Abenteuern. Comiclegende Gene Colan (1926-2011) zeichnete die ersten Geschichten in seinem gewohnt dynamischen Stil. In der Nummer 17 machte der Captain dann einen radikalen Kostümwechsel durch und er erhielt schliesslich doch noch ein rot-dunkelblaues Kostüm das viele ikonische Superhelden verbindet. (DCs Superman und Marvels Thor tragen z.B. auch rot-blau.) Fun-Fact am Rande: Captain Marvel ist einer der wenigen Superhelden (vielleicht der einzige?), der starb und auch tot blieb. Das Superheldensterben ist in den letzten Jahren ja inflationär geworden - nur bleiben die Helden dann nicht wirklich tot. Sie kommen immer wieder zurück. Nicht so dieser Captain. Jim Starlin liess den Kree Mar-Vell 1982 in der Graphic Novel The Death of Captain Marvel unspektakulär und gewöhnlich an Krebs sterben.
